Neferti kneels in front of her grandfather, the two of them facing each other in their home's training hall. Their swords rest on small stands in front of them, blades gleaming in the morning light. Though she tries to keep an appearance of calmness, her tail twitches in excitement behind her- She loves her grandfather dearly, and to be trained by him is the greatest honor imaginable.

"The sword is a complete weapon." Isaac says, lifting his sword gingerly, one hand under the hilt and one under the base of the blade. "Do you know what that means, Neferti?"

"It, um..." Neferti scrunches up her eyebrows, thinking. She wanted to impress her grandpa, so she thought carefully. What would it mean to be complete? "It means... It's not missing anything?"

"That's right." Isaac nods, smiling kindly, and Neferti beams in joy that she got the answer. "The sword, as a weapon, can be anything it needs to be."

He stands, taking the sword and taking a ready stance. "Unlike a spear, it has nothing it cannot do. Unlike a hammer, it can be used in any situation. Unlike an axe, it can be used at any range, in any way."

Neferti starts to say something, but stops herself, fidgeting. She shouldn't interrupt. She has to let Grandpa let her talk, first. But the fact that she wants to say something is clearly written on her face, and Isaac smiles. "What is it?"

"If the sword is complete, what's the point of having any other weapon?" She speaks her mind clearly, confusion in her voice. "Since we have all those other weapons, doesn't that mean the sword really can't do do all that?"

Isaac laughs. He waves a hand, and a steel plate rises up in front of him, created by his magic, as Neferti stares on in anticipation. He takes his sword and swings... and cuts the steel in half. Neferti covers her ears at the screech of metal, as Isaac stares on, a bit dumbfounded.

"Ah, well... You can do that with training, too." He laughs a bit, sheepishly. "Though I tried to hold back... The sword isn't as useful against an armor plate like that. So..." He conjures up another steel plate, and this time, taps the sharp edge of the sword against it. It doesn’t give this time, thankfully.

“To fight an armored enemy, like the scaled serpents we face, there are other ways.” He continues. He suddenly takes a different, longer stance, and flips his sword, grabbing it by the base of the blade and using the pommel as a hammer. “This is called the hammer-blow.” The steel plate falls to the ground, crushed into several pieces.

He waves a hand again, and this time, conjured up plates overlapping like scales. “With a sword, it’s difficult to accurately pierce like a spear can. But halfswording can fix that.” He steps forward again, this time with one hand around the hilt, and one hand around the base of the blade to guide it, slipping the blade between the scales with ease.

Neferti raises her hand, and Isaac laughs at her eagerness. “Can you throw it, too?” She asks. “If you fight an enemy too far away and can’t use magic?”

Isaac shakes his head. “You must never throw your sword away, Neferti.” He tells her solemnly. “The sword is the symbol of the knight. It is your honor and pride made manifest. To throw your sword away is to likely never see it again… If it falls from the city, or is taken by the monster, then you are disarmed with nothing left to fight but your magic. And using your magic wrong will only summon more monsters. To lose your sword as a knight is to invite disaster.”

Neferti nods, ears drooping. It seems she’d accidentally said something bad… She’d have to remember that. She picks up her sword, holding it gingerly in her claws. The sword is a complete weapon…

“Now, then!” Isaac smiles down at her through his beard. “It’s your turn to try those techniques.”

All her worry is instantly forgotten with excitement as Isaac conjures up more plates to train against.
